Evaluation - A brief history of..

For context of practice brief .. 'A brief history of'  we had to create a publication putting our context into practice and designing the appropriate way of distributing it. We also had to create the appropriate content for the publication using information of our chosen topic. I decided to do my publication about the history of Levis Strauss. I decided on this because we covered Levis in a fashion photography lecture.

I firstly wanted to create an A0 pair of paper jeans used from a thick stock. But it wasn't possible to print double sided so i had to come up with a new design that i felt would appropriate. The style of sticking on Levi jeans pockets is iconic so i decided to make a large denim pocket to fit my publication into. I think this really helped with the overall aesthetic and using dark denim material worked nice with the antique white stock that i used for the publication.I originally wanted the publication to have around 16 double page spreads some with key information and some with just images and some with just quotes. when i started to plan and create the publication i realised this wasn't going to be an option and i would have to double the amount of pages and more as i had a lot of content to cover. I wanted the publication to be a memorabilia booklet for Levi jeans lovers so it was important i covered all the right information.

To make my publication content as thorough and in depth as i possible could without using unnecessary information i was advised to include iconic movements in clothing through the times from when Levis first began till now i decided to focus on american icons such as James Dean and Marlin Brando who had an effect on the youth and culture of the time i felt as though this would give people an insight into how popular and incredible the  blue jeans were. I think i had a lot of research to work with as i used every possible source of research , from primary research, internet , books and Levi Strauss history videos.

what worked:- my extensive research helped me come up with the best possible content for my publication , i found my use of stock for the publication was appropriate i wanted it to have a clean cut design and i felt the off white colour worked really nice along side the red numbering and the Levis tab on the front cover. My use of typefaces were all typefaces that are used by Levi Strauss & Company so this added to the hole look and feel of the publication. The denim pocket i created for the publication is so that the publication can fit inside of it like a glove. Using the red Levis tab and sewing it to the pocket added to the aesthetic and made it look like an actual Levis pocket. My binding was also i success i originally wanted to perfect bind but i was advised with my amount of pages it might rip from the centre so i went for the saddle stitch the string i used matched the same colour as my stock with really worked in my favour.
what didn't:- I feel as though i should have experimented with different margin spaces before printing my work out as some of the text was slightly tight in the centre on the quote pages. I also feel although some of my pages had to much text on them but with some topics that i covered in my publication it was difficult not to include what i needed to. I also wish i had created a better plan before making my indesign document page setup as i ended up deleting and then reading pages when i needed to add other things in that i needed to cover.Although my publication was completed printed and binded in more than enough time i wish i had known my exact content earlier as i was a little confused of what route or tone of voice to talk in it restricted my time.

I loved this brief i spent a lot of time making sure the content and images and style of publication matched the pocket and the general aesthetics of the final product. Im really pleased with my choice of material stock and also colour choices. If i was to repeat this brief i would take into consideration what things didn't work as well this time round and adjust them and develop them. I feel like I've learnt a lot of techniques and developed my research skills throughout this brief and whole module and i will apply them to future briefs.
