Designing my publication - 'Recipes to cook up the perfect housewife'

DESIGNING MY PUBLICATION

Development/Layouts-

Using the typeface i had chosen and titling i wrote ' Recipes to cook up the Perfect Housewife on the page and began playing around with it to see how it looked.

I didn't feel like it was working on a portrait page size. I decided to refer back to my design choices post to make sure i kept all the aesthetics and features the same. I began by making sure my paper size was correct and made a document with around 20 singular pages to start with.

I placed text central to the page landscape.
Looking at my research i selected this pattern and decided it would work well with the aesthetics of my publication especially printed on antique white stock.

I placed the border at the bottom of the page.

PAGE TEMPLATE

I decided to have ingredients a few pages throughout with basically had commands about how to look after your husband and how to behave. I used the 'engagement' typeface for half of the body copy. I used a san serif font for  a little history and insight into 'The 1950s housewife.'

For the introduction page i decided to use an image of some step ford wives i placed this with the text underneath and i used cup cakes for page numbers. I also used the same pattern at the bottom of the page to keep the consistency.

After double checking with Richard & Simon if my aesthetics reflected the 1950s era , i was advised if i was going to produce a publication about 1950s i should go all out and keep all the typography in the italic script font.

I decided i would look on google vectors for 1950s symbols ect. I came across these stars and began scattering them across pages.

I filled some pages with quotes from 'The Good Wife'.

Extra Aesthetics to be added to pages throughout-

Changed the type-

For this specific page as well as adding stars i added a large box with all different size sides to make it look over the top and cheesy. As i would be placing the tips in there.
Finished page -

For the next page it was about house appliances i carried on the aesthetics as before but made sure the title was slightly bigger and more slanted i placed the text over the image slightly.

I placed the image on the left hand side and added the text around it also using a large title across the top. After finishing the page i realised there was to much negative space under the title so i made it more slanted.

For this particular page i used an advertisement with a lady advertising tomato sauce - ' You mean a women can open it?' I felt this was a strong stereotypical advertisement against women so it was revenant to use it. I made the image larger and wrote text about the image centralised underneath.

This page features an image and a 'Good Wife' Quote.

This page i didnt feature a tip just writing about body image in relation to the advertisement.

This page i focussed on a piece of text in a book called "how to be a good wife" and then placed some examples down the page in the same style as the page above.

Black and white photography -

This page was specifically about something a wife can do for her husband so i used an image that would reflect the text.

Using a slanted title again , also keeping the focus on the large advertisment.

I next wanted to move on to images and advertising that made women objectified and sexualised. so i began using this image of a lady with a shopping bag who looks very glamorous.

I moved the image to the right hand side on this page to show a variation and put a large tip in a big square at the top with text underneath.

I used this specific image i found online to portray how women are sexualised i used the image on one of the double page spreads with a small amount of writing speaking abut the image.

This page reflects the page above but this time i have spoken about objectification.

These last two double page spreads talk about how women are used in advertising and how the stereotype still remains. I placed the images under the title text.

I used the same layout for the last two pages. I feel these images were relevant to use as they reflected the objectification women face yet the images also reflect a housewife theme.

I am really happy with my final piece , i think as i knew what type of era i was designing for once i had made a template the publication began to flow. I feel asthough my images colur choices and typography were appropriate and it all works as a set.
