''IF YOUR NOT MOTIVATED YOUR MANIPULATED"
In our session we looked at manifesto -
we looked at http://www.eyemagazine.com/feature/article/first-things-first-manifesto-2000 i found this article really interesting its proving the point about how design does really affect how we think and feel and how designers use certain skills to sell certain products.
''There are pursuits more worthy of our problem-solving skills. Unprecedented environmental, social and cultural crises demand our attention. Many cultural interventions, social marketing campaigns, books, magazines, exhibitions, educational tools, television programmes, films, charitable causes and other information design projects urgently require our expertise and help."
It goes on to say that basically peoples skills are being wasted on things less important and focus on things that are more of a priority.
In 1964, 22 visual communicators signed the original call for our skills to be put to worthwhile use. With the explosive growth of global commercial culture, their message has only grown more urgent. Today, we renew their manifesto in expectation that no more decades will pass before it is taken to heart.
In our session we were given four words. ( one after another after a small period of time) POLITICS , SOCIETY, CULTURE & HISTORY. We paired up and had to make an a3 piece of paper into 8 sections. Next to make a list of 20 things (10 each ) that first come to our head when given a word.
We come up with such words as:
Politics
- riots
- lies
- news
- unfulfilled promises
- stress
- men
- government
- law
- society
Society
- chavs
- alienation
- drinking
- classes
- mess
- culture
- people
- race
- shops
- struggle
- money
- tax
- government
- law police
- dole
Culture

History

- human evolution
- culture
- war
- wikipedia
- social status
- people
- global
For the second a3 piece of paper we split it up the same but we had to make a list of the positives and negative for each sub category.
some of the negatives we come up with were:-
- Politics:- stress , riots, decisions , budget & law
- Society:- Chavs , drinking , mess , alienation , drinking , money dole , mess & classes
- Culture:- colour , documentation , religion & expensive
- History:- Nazis , war , social status & people
We found it was a lot easier writing something positive than negative for certain sub categories.
Using the lists, statements and points of discussion introduced in the studio workshop as a starting point, write 4 short statements that summarise your individual positioning / opinions in relation to the following contexts:
Politics Society Culture History
You should aime to write a clear statement (50 - 100 words) that explains what you believe and why in response to each of the four words. The statements should be positive rather than negative affirmations. If you don't like something or are against a certain viewpoint, you should aim to communicate the positive response to it as discussed in the session.
Politics -
Our country has a government, which is group of people who decide how to implement the rules we all live by in our society, with regards to the benefit system, which gives money to people who cannot afford a reasonable standard of living, this is afforded because the working population pays tax and the government believes everyone should not live in poverty, this is society working together. We do need a governing body to keep the country in order.
Society -
We all play our part in society, our relationships with each other, our framework of people in control, the police the government, our health service who looks after our sick, and we function because we all have our part to play, helping to supply us with services, we rely on from our homes/heating/food to the cars we drive, flights we take, making our lives manageable , with all the resources available to us, enabling us to progress through schools, colleges and universities, opening opportunities to make our individual lives and our world as a whole a much better place. Through continued efforts to improve the acceptance of everyone as individuals will only help to make a better world for everyone.
Culture -
Culture is a societies way of life , from the food we eat, to our religion, culture is passed on by peoples learning, as they grow up, and the parents pass on to the next generation and so on, we now live in a multi-cultural society which is helping us to embrace each other’s way of life and break down racist barriers.
History -
History is just as important as engineering or science when it comes to teaching us innovation, it helps us understand why we live the way we do now, how we have evolved as a society, why the rules that we have now are there. Our country is steeped in history with our royal family, which brings a large amount of money within the tourist trade to this country.
