Seminar 4 - The gaze & The media

THE GAZE & THE MEDIA

Reflecting on the lecture - 
  • Women are represented in a certain way and have been throughout history.
  • Most nudes are depictions of women.
  • Women tend to be represented in a way in visual culture that sexualises and objects them.
  • Scrutiny of women for pleasure and beauty.
‘according to usage and conventions which are at last being questioned but have by no means been overcome - men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at’ (berger 1972).
  • Men have been produces of culture and visual culture.
  • No women artists till the 1940's
Hans Memling 'Vanity' - The painting isn't about just women but vanity and how women love to look at them selves and there for its okay for us to look at them.

Difference between ..MANET - OLYMPIA   - Titans venus of Urbin,1538

The first painting she is a prostitute it uses her laid on her bed looking at you.The painting also has a cat on the end of bed on edge and cats also are unloyal and come and go as they please. The second painting the lady again naked lying on the bed and she is looking flirtatious and has her hand in a compromised position theres also a dog laid at the bottom of her bed. Dogs are a loyal.

  • Acts as constant visible reminder of what women should look/be like in society. Gives you instructions of what your like should be an drakes you dissatisfied of what you like.
Naked vs Nude

Naked is to be yourself.
Nude is to be seen by others , objectification
