Critical Analysis OUGD401 studio session 1

Critical Analysis
Based on the material, exercises, discussions and concepts introduce during the sudio session: Identify and explain 5 reasons why critical analysis is an important part of education, learning and devloping your understanding.Identify and explain why the crit group critique is useful in the development of your work, skills and opinions.

Studio lessons notes:-

  • each section requires evaluation
  • PPP-reflection
  • context of theory - analysis

Critic , Criticism , Critical , Criterion

&

Critique
=
Greek : To judge to distinguish to select.

What we think of crits:

Positives- guidance , praise , input on ideas , inspiration , confidence , opinions
Negatives- Not agreeing , wrong concept , confusing and expectations.

A good crit is when you have received feedback you can work on.

We did an exercise where with a partner we spoke about our chosen images and used the following criteria to make notes on the image.

D - describe ( what can you see?)

Colour type selection , manipulation of type, layout , quality of image . line and stoke.

I - Interpret ( what is it about?)

Message , clarity , function context , audience , tone of voice.

E- evaluate (how good is it?)

aesthetics , communication , design , elements , execution , does it function clairty?

T- Theorise (how could it be improved?)

Feedback Suggest.

The critique is both a dealing and a  marker of a perpetual beginning a freeze frame. Movement in the context of a continuous studio practice...This favours process over product the means over the world.

The list we come up with was :

colour, layout, communication, visual content, non-visual content, function, quality of execution, legibility, audience, context, concept, message, media/method of production.

The five criteria i have chosen are
  • quality of execution
  • legibilty
  • colour
  • layout
  • message

I think the quality of execution is important because its obviously got to be put together appropriately and visually pleasing. I believe legibility is also important else you wouldn't be able to see the message or understand what the piece is trying to communicate/advertise ect. Colour makes all the difference with a piece of graphics either something really simple or bold. The layout can have a huge impact on a piece of graphic design. The message has got to be clear for the viewer.

This was the first image i chose which i liked , i found the quality of the execution was unique its very legible and i found that as I'm a big fan of monochrome it works really well. the layout is central which i feel appropriate as it fills up the page. I do believe its an advertisement for a magazine i think the message is clear.

For the second image i chose which i liked I'm not to sure about the layout which the double sided spread with the borders i would of left the border out. i love the colours used and although it doesn't use any text it is legible  and the quality of execution is neat and visually asthetic.

Two images i hated :- The quality of execution for this image is awful it has images overlapping where they dont work. The legibility is reasonable but the font against the crayons would be hard to see from a distance. The layout doesn't work with the text thrown randomly across the bottom of the image.

For the second image i chose this small fried chicken advertisementadvertisment is terrible the quality of execution is poor and i don't feel as though it even looks like a fast food sign . All the text together and colours against the off white background make it un-legible. Also the word 'slushies' placed underneath the fried chicken text is missleading. The layout would be ok if it had been made on a bigger scale.
