Collect,Categorise&Communicate -CharityOUGD405

Research group topic - Charity
For our new brief we got put into groups of around 5 to 6 , and got given a group topic. We then as a group made a list of all the different sub categories which fall under that. Our topic was Charity the list we come up with was.
  • where the money goes
  • items found at charity shop
  • motivation self value
  • competiton
  • promotional , advertising
  • local indépendant charities vs. global
  • how to prioritise charities
  • volunteering
I chose to focus on the topic of volunteering as i felt i knew the most about it. I wanted to research into what volunteering is who can get involved and the different types eg. volunteering abroad where you pay to go.

Primary Research board

I already knew a little about volunteering but I thought I would go out and get some facts from some popular charities situated in Leeds city center. I first went to the British heart foundation; they have lots of leaflets and information about wanting people to donate but not very much information about volunteering.

I went to the RSPCA store where they gave me a volunteer form. The main questions it asked were what role you would prefer to do inside the store, what days your available and for a referee. I asked the lady behind the counter a few questions.

  • Do you have volunteering vacacines?
  • How many hours can you do?
  • what roles do you do in the store?
  • why did you choose to do it?
  • Is it beneficial?
The lady told me you can choose as many hours as you like she only does one day a week. she helps sort out the shop and works behind the counter. She enjoys doing it as feels asthough shes doing her bit.

Also for my primary research my mums friend works for butter wick hospital so i rang her up and got some information-
There are 600 people who volunteer for The Butterwick Hospital. There are 15 Butterwick Hosptial shops. In some areas theres a community of around 40 O.A.P’s who work just 2hrs a week all doing there little bit.The amazing people who volunteer for The Butter Wick Hospital range from ages 16+ to the elderly. The job roles consist of working in the shops, receptionists in the hospitals, working in the patients bedrooms , kitchens , Fundraising and even drivers. There’s even one boy who is quite shy who comes in and hoovers for a few hours a week just because he wants to give something. A lot of the volunteers are people who are either retired or who have actually lost someone themselves just want to feel as though there giving something back.

Focussed research board

For my focussed research i focused on volunteering abroad, and how you have to actual pay to volunteer.

I spoke to a teacher from the university who supports and runs a uganda trip:-

David Braham who is involved in running the East African playgrounds recruitment process for LCA he told me about the opportunity that is available to go to Uganda for the summer building and designing playgrounds and helping the children. He gave me an information pack, and volunteer application form. You have to raise and pay quite a lot of money to go. He also told me about the chance for fundraising.

Benefits of Volunteering - Volunteering gives a sense of purpose to all involved not only can a person help community’s abroad. They can also help themselves. Benefits include building self-confidence and self-worth, improving communication skills and encouraging social development.

For my direction of research I looked at a charity called East African playgrounds.. Like most abroad volunteering programs you have to pay to go. Volunteers are expected to fund raise a minimum of just £700 for the playground and pay £250 living expense for the month they are on project in Uganda. Volunteers are then responsible for the standard travel costs of flights, visa, vaccinations, insurance and spending money.
