Further aesthetics research - No Zine Patrick fry

RESEARCH - NO ZINE

After my crit one of my points on my notes was to research into No zine - Patrick Fry as the my work already reflects this aesthetic and i could take something from it.

I first had a look at his website i showcases all of his different double page spreads and zine booklet covers.

I took some images to show examples of the work i liked the most his work is really simplistic and the choices of colours work really well together.

I had already decided to create a hash tagged numbers on the front of my book so it was nice to have a look and see how these zines vary from my idea and how well they work .
I have chosen to have negative space on my double page spreads but i don't think i have utilised the space very well unlike this example here i will consider my layout more.

I really like the vertical titles on this page i will experiment to achieve somthing that looks innovative for my booklets.

Research - Grids & Layouts

GRIDS & LAYOUT

Grids and layout are a vital part of designing as they are guidelines where to drop your information and how to

Golden Ratio Fibonacci Sequence -

The Golden Section is an aesthetically pleasing division of space that is often used by artists as the basis for measurements within their composition.

The Golden Section is a ratio which is evident throughout the universe as the number Phi and is also related to Fibonacci Series. You can use this ratio to good effect in design by making sure that elements of your grid conform to this ratio. Using the Golden Section can ensure a natural sense of correct composition, even though it is based in mathematics it will ‘feel’ right.

This sequence is not only evident within design but also nature

The human face follows the ratio we find people whose faces are truer to the ratio more attractive
Classic Renaissance masterpieces from antiquity and even human body parts are proportioned based on the ratio down to the fingers themselves.

Fibonacci sequence a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of two proceeding numbers.

draw two small squares together

draw a third square using the combined lengths of the two original squares together.

continue to repeat the process and the set.

55 point title should be complemented with the 34 point body copy by applying Fibonacci's sequence

A spiral growing out of squares sized according to Fibonacci Series (0+1=1; 1+1=2; 1+2=3; 2+3=5; 3+5=8; etc). This spiral can be found in nature, art, design and architecture.

THE DESIGN GRID:

A construction grid that helps to organize a design area. The design grid makes it easier to design clearly, consistently and with continuity. It is a system of guidelines, borders (margins), and columns into which elements are placed and to which they are aligned. Before document layout begins following design elements should be established:
Format (size of the finished project)

Type area and margins

Columns (column width, column spacing, column height)

Basic typeface and point sizes (number of character in a column)

Column spacing (number of lines in a column)

Dividing the column into grid fields

Margin types

Pagination (number of pages in the document)

Color scheme

Rule of thirds -

The rule of thirds is a "rule of thumb" or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

Primary Research - Brown paper

PRIMARY RESEARCH

When i went home for a few days i went to Hobby craft as i thought it would be the best place for me to get some brown stock. I was interested in using brown stock after i had done some research into some innovative envelope design and the use of brown stock looked interesting to me.

When i went to hobby craft i looked around the stock section first. There wasn't anything exactly how i wanted i did find some brown stock that was not as thick as i wanted or as light as i had of hoped.

I did find a collection of envelopes that had the stock i would of liked to buy although it was more like a really sturdy card and would of been to difficult to create envelopes out of.
I also looked at the small brown box section to see if there was any stock.

I was disappointed i couldn't buy the stock i wanted but after looking at what else was available i decided that a nice thick ivory might be more appropriate for my brief and using brown paper might of been to obvious for an envelope design. After going to hobby craft i will carry on my research for stock so i can find the best available for my print pack.

Evolution Print Talk

EVOLUTION PRINT

- Aluminium print

- CTP computer plate system

- 20 ml around the edge 700 x 1000

- Gloss, silk , uncoated
Uncoated - Flatter images , hands on feel , when the dot hits the paper slight spread
Gloss & Silk , images a lot sharper , more use on corporate jobs.

- Weight on paper , Uncoated is thicker than gloss , gloss is more of a compressed feel.

Litho Vs. Digital

- Litho 5 presses
- Litho to people is better print but more expensive
- Maximum sheet size for Digital is SR3 32x450

- Vegetable based ink
- Ink powder based

Cost

- Click Charge
- Per sheet 5 - 10p 1 colour
- Full colour sheet 30p per side

Mistakes people make when sending things to print

- Bleed / 3ml and include strokes and crop marks
- Send artwork over as art work incase things need tweaking
- Spot colours in work that aren't needed change to CYMK
- If you have any foils uv and perforation set that up as an individual spot colour in another file.
- Image size if you create a large file for a small space takes up to much time.

Booklet try work in 8 , 16's or 32's.

Work in turn you take the stock out turn it over and round and feed it back through. If your working with colour its 8 sheets not 4.

Can print onto coloured stock but sometimes evolution put a tint into the stock.

Fluorescent stock rare you can print onto it but fluorescent inks work better.

Design for print - Perforated Packaging

 PERFORATED PACKAGING

For my brief i am really interested in creating some packaging that can be opened up like a gift or a present as the theme behind my concept is the secret to printing so it would be appropriate for the packaging to be in that style.

I found this particular packaging on matter. They have created different designs for the specific years to send out there information for people to read. They create there ideas in an innovative way as they are a design company they want there content to stand out. This specific design has been created so when the box has been ripped open you only need the content and the box can be disposed of. I like the use of simplistic design used on the cover and the limited information until you open the box.

This is another design they created for another year. I love products that have been laser cut so you can see through them onto the next page.

PUNKTUM-

I found this next design on behance and it is a similar design but the sides of the box have actually not sealed up but you still have to rip the perforated tab to get inside of the packaging.

This set of design envelopes haven't actually been perforated but i really love there use of brown stock and the fact they have used candle wax to drop on to the front to seal up the design. It would have to be ripped open to get inside.

The back of this packaging has a small strip perforation that is placed on the back down the centre.
I really like how they have used the perforation its really simple and fits with the aesthetic.
